This symposium is aimed at exposing the engineering college students, especially studying
at undergraduate level, to the exciting opportunities that lies ahead in the field of nuclear
engineering. The advent of nuclear reactors has had its influence in the advancement
of every engineering discipline. The stringent licensing requirements have forced every
discipline to expand its research and development domain and have been the engine
that has driven inventions in Chemical, Electrical, Environmental, Instrumentation and
Control, Metallurgy and Material science and Mechanical engineering disciplines. Analyses
of safety of nuclear reactors have contributed to significant developments in Applied
Mathematics, such as, Numerical methods, Probabilistic Risk Assessment, etc. In short,
Nuclear Engineering is a true amalgamation of all disciplines.
The symposium presents a unique opportunity for young engineers who are in various fields
to get a rich exposure of this exciting field. While this discipline has matured in the Western
World, it is slowly and steadily taking its firm roots in India. The symposium has two distinct
parts. The first part brings all students who have no exposure to nuclear engineering to a
level they start appreciating it. The second part presents the opportunities.
First the students are introduced to the nuclear program in India, followed by a historical
account of the development of nuclear power plants and its evolution. Once they are
geared up they are now introduced to the details of nuclear reactors and its technological
features, viz., fuel cycle, reactor safety, nuclear radiation and nuclear waste management.
This is followed by exposure to the opportunities in industry and research institutes in India
as well as in US. The next session introduces the educational opportunities that exist in India
and US. The symposium concludes with a panel discussion, which has representation from
India and US, and will deliberate on the exciting road ahead. Further, there will be exhibition
stalls from some of the world leaders in nuclear power plant design, nuclear industry
vendors, suppliers and service providers.
The speakers chosen are leaders in their respective fields and have very rich experience. The
students can also get a feel of the frontier nuclear organizations and their product profile
in the nuclear business chain. Thus, the symposium offers a golden opportunity to get the
whole spectrum of nuclear engineering in one day and it is likely to make many students sit
up, take notice and possibly go into this exciting field. Best of all, it is free for students and
teachers. The seating capacity is limited to 250 students and educators. We would like to
have the best students and a good representation from many institutes/universities. The
schedule of the symposium is available at
