Revitalizing the Niagara-Finger Lakes Region

Building the Chapter

A Brief History of the Niagara-Finger Lakes Region of ANS

Our chapter was originally established in November of 1962.  In addition to being one of the longest-established ANS Chapters, we host the R.E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant, Nine Mile Point Nuclear Generating Station, and the James Fitzpatrick Nuclear Power Plant.  We also have many reputable schools bearing some of the nation’s foremost science and technology programs, including the Rochester Institute of Technology, Cornell University, University of Rochester, and Syracuse University.

The Process of Revitalizing

The Niagara-Finger Lakes Chapter of the American Nuclear Society entered the revitalization phase of development in late 2016 after several years of inactivity.  More than ever, nuclear science and technology requires our active involvement in building a base of solid support across the nation.  Leadership billets for Chair, Co-Chair, Secretary and Treasurer have all been filled and we are seeking both new members and additional leadership for the vacant roles listed on our Officers page.

We are seeking financial support from several corporations to build a yearly budget.  Additionally, we are engaging several colleges and Universities to establish academic chapters for the region in which we operate.  These include the Rochester Institute of Technology, Cornell University and Syracuse University.  New inquiries for local chapter establishment and development are always welcome.

Additionally, we are hosting a plant tour of the R.E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant as corporate sponsors of the Science Teachers’ Association of New York State.  We are also getting involved with the Finger Lakes region of Boy and Girl Scouts of America for merit badge assessment and activity development.

Officer’s Actions

The Chapter Officers will continue to build relationships in our local communities and seek new opportunities to expand our Chapter’s membership and activities.

Member’s Actions

Chapter Members are encouraged to seek active involvement in chapter activities and submit new requests for involvement to the chapter leadership team.

The Current State of our Chapter

The Chapter presently hosts dozens of members across the Western New York area.  As we are in the process of revitalizing, we are seeking volunteers and new ideas for implementing professional development, academic input, and local community involvement.  Please submit any new ideas via our Contact Us page.
