THE NUCLEAR WORK FORCE: CHALLENGES AHEAD

Donald Price will address several issues related to the nuclear work force, including trends in nuclear plant staffing, plant costs and performance, the impact on the nuclear industry of coming retirements and other worker supply problems. Mr. Price, a Principal at Navigant Consulting, has over 20 years of professional experience in the nuclear industry. Prior to joining Navigant, he was a Principal with Tim D. Martin & Associates, worked as a management consultant with Booz, Allen & Hamilton, was an inspector and program manager with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and served in the Navy as a submarine officer.

With Navigant Consulting Mr. Price specializes in assisting electric utilities develop innovative solutions to management problems related to organizational design, career development, operations, nuclear operator training pipeline, budgeting and cost control. He has been focused particularly on applying new approaches and perspectives to solving problems in staffing, human resources and staff development areas. Mr. Price has performed financial analyses and developed budget models for analyzing the viability of operating nuclear plants.

At the Nuclear Regulatory Commission he designed and implemented a program of periodic evaluations of utility performance, now called the Systematic Assessment of Licensee Performance program and led or participated in over 50 operations and quality assurance inspections at seven electric utilities. As a naval officer Mr. Price was responsible for the operation, maintenance, and training associated with a Naval nuclear reactor.

Mr. Price graduated with honors from the Wharton School, receiving an MBA in Decision Sciences and Finance. He obtained an MA in Personnel Management from Central Michigan University, and graduated with distinction form the United States Naval Academy with a BS in Engineering.
