Kickoff Dinner Meeting
The American Nuclear Society (ANS) Florida Local Section would like to invite you to a kickoff dinner meeting. The ANS Florida Local Section is undergoing a revitalization effort with support from ANS National, and we are delighted to have an exciting dinner meeting lined up for our first event
We are honored to have Dr. Peter Lyons as the special guest speaker. Dr. Lyons is currently the Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy. As Assistant Secretary, Dr. Lyons is responsible for all programs and activities of the Office of Nuclear Energy under the Department of Energy. Dr. Lyons has many years of technical, policy and regulatory experience in the nuclear field and is a strong and consistent proponent of STEM education.
This dinner meeting will coincide with the semi – annual meeting of Integrated Research Project (IRP) Fuel Aging in Storage and Transportation (FAST), and will provide an opportunity to meet with this research team. The semi-annual meeting includes six university partners with multiple investigators from each university, as well as supporting advisors from Savanna River National Laboratory and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, with Korea, Spain and potentially EDF (France) sending observers.
In addition to this technical program and networking opportunity, the ANS Florida has invited Ms. Simona de Silvestro to attend the dinner. Ms. Silvestro is known for being an IndyCar driver, but more importantly, she is the spokesperson for the Nuclear Clean Air Energy campaign. Among the many goals of the Nuclear Clean Air Energy campaign is to generate visibility for the nuclear clean air energy message through national educational outreach efforts as well as through individual and organizational professional activities. Ms. Silvestro is also a strong proponent of STEM education and outreach among high school and college students.
We are very honored to be able to offer such a strong technical and networking program for this first dinner meeting of the new Florida section, and to have two strong proponents of STEM education with such diverse backgrounds. As our section is in revitalization, we are in the midst of reaching out to previous members as well as inviting new members to the section; please forward this meeting announcement to anyone you believe would be interested in the section. We hope that you will join us at this special event!
