A Message from the Chair

Greetings ANS Pittsburgh Section,

In case you folks are not aware, I will be officially the Pittsburgh Section Chair for 2020. I look forward to working with you all with the goal of helping to advance ANS Pittsburgh Section and National objectives. I will be setting up reoccurring bi-weekly Executive Committee meetings on Thursday meetings starting 1/23/2020.

A few things that are on my mind as vice-Chair and acting chair for portions of 2019.
Chair comments to kick off 2020.

  • We should be striving to increase local Pittsburgh Section membership and National Membership for professionals and advocates in the Western PA.
  • We should be looking for ways to increase engagement in ANS Professionally at our workplace, which for most of us is Westinghouse.
  • This is a good way to develop professional and technical skills while networking with nuclear professionals
  • This is a good way to increase technical leadership and showcase industry expertise
  • To these points we should discuss our role in supporting topical meeting planning in Pittsburgh – this is something we haven’t planned over the last several years, but is a great way for ANS Pittsburgh to engage directly with ANS National in a well-defined program.
  •  We should be determining how we want to interface with National on various programs, such as but not limited to our energy policy committee, webpage/webmaster development, management of meeting minutes, how we apply for grants, awards etc
  • We should be looking for ways to develop partnerships with University of Pittsburgh and CMU – in particular Pitt who has a local student section.
  • As part of the ANS 2020 Change Plan, student sections will flow into the local Pittsburgh Sections.
  • We should be looking for ways to solicit and increase engagement in the ANS Pittsburgh Section to feel more like a community of nuclear professionals and advocates in the Pittsburgh and Western PA region.
  • By virtue of the fact that many of us in the ANS Pittsburgh Section work for Westinghouse HQ and as ANS Pittsburgh execs we should be looking for ways to increase Westinghouse’s support of ANS Pittsburgh Section and National outreach events and programs.
  • We do a really good job of outreach in the winter/spring, but I would like us to plan and develop new strategies, programs and events for late spring,
    summer, and fall.
