Presentation Title and Summary: Nuclear Fuel:  Meeting the Challenge

Nuclear fuel for US reactors is produced from uranium and processing services that are acquired globally. As a result, the supply of nuclear fuel is susceptible to disruption from processing plant breakdowns, weather events, transportation issues, and geopolitics. In spite of these challenges, US nuclear plant operators have successfully fueled their plants for many decades. New plant types being considered, and power uprates and cycle extensions at existing plants, will require changes to the fuel cycle. This presentation describes current nuclear fuel supply processes and identifies changes and challenges for the future.

About the Speaker: Susan Hoxie-Key has spent nearly 50 years in the nuclear industry, including 11 years supporting reactor operations at Savannah River and 31 years working in nuclear fuel for Southern Company.
